It's Okay to Take a Break—Traveling for Self-Care and Connection

As caregivers, especially in families with special needs, we often pour every ounce of energy into those we love. But here’s a gentle reminder you may need to hear: You deserve a break, too.

This summer, consider making the conscious choice to travel—without guilt, without shame, and without your special needs family member. Whether it's a four-day weekend, a local staycation, or a trip a few hours away, the goal is simple: prioritize self-care or nurture intimacy with your partner. My husband and I have made it a point to travel a few times a year—sometimes together, sometimes solo. It's become a vital part of keeping our relationship strong and our individual spirits refreshed.

Of course, the first step is planning a trusted replacement to care for your loved one. This could mean working with a state agency, hiring respite care, or asking a grandparent or close relative to step in. There’s no shame in asking for help. In fact, it’s a powerful act of love—for yourself and your family.

We carry so much responsibility that it’s easy to forget we’re allowed to recharge. Giving yourself permission to get away—mentally, emotionally, and physically—is not selfish.

Let’s normalize travel and self-care for caregivers. Let go of what others might think. The world outside your daily routine is filled with new people, healing spaces, and joyful moments that are waiting to pour back into you.

You are worthy of the break. Go ahead and plan it. If you need any ideas on how to create a more satisfying life, reach out to me!
