As Thanksgiving approaches, it's a wonderful time to embrace the holiday as an opportunity for gratitude and reflection.
Thanksgiving is more than a day of gratifying ourselves with food, wine and desserts which are hallmarks of the tradition; it's a moment to slow down and create special memories with our families, especially with loved ones who have special needs.
Engaging in family activities that inspire a connection is a key ingredient for making it special. Whether that means including the family in the simple preparation of a recipe or setting the table together before Thanksgiving dinner. These small meaningful moments can lead to big memorable connections.
However, the holiday can bring challenges, particularly for parents supporting a special needs child. Striving for the perfect day, can create unnecessary stress or unwanted emotions. Embracing imperfection, practicing letting go, and allowing for flexibility can lead to a better Thanksgiving Day experience.
Take care of your own well-being to minimize the effects of long-term stress. Prioritize taking breaks outside, getting enough sleep before hosting, eating healthily and drinking in moderation. The more we nurture our physical, emotional and spiritual health, the better we can respond to challenges that may come our way.
My hope is that your Thanksgiving be a beautiful celebration of gratitude, love, and togetherness as you create memories for your special family.
Wishing the best of healthy, peace and happiness,
